William says that Bashir interview cover-up caused Diana’s fears, paranoia and isolation
ANGRY Princes William and Harry savaged the BBC over Martin Bashir’s Panorama interview with their mother.
The Duke of Cambridge, 38, said the broadcaster’s “cover-up” added to Princess Diana’s “fear, paranoia and isolation”.
It came after an inquiry found Bashir acted in a “deceitful” way and faked documents to obtain the 1995 interview.
The BBC and Bashir have apologised.
PRINCE William said last night the Panorama Princess Diana interview episode should never air again as he slammed the BBC over its handling of the Martin Bashir scandal.
The Duke of Cambridge expressed “indescribable sadness” at failings in airing the 1995 programme which plagued “her fear, paranoia and isolation”.
He said he was in no doubt that the disgraced reporter’s web of deceit “substantially influenced” what Diana said, and “was a major contribution to making my parents’ relationship worse”.
The Prince’s statement was broadcast to the nation last night after a damning report by ex-judge Lord Dyson into the BBC practices in landing its “scoop of the century”.
William said the interview has “no legitimacy and should never be aired again” adding: “It effectively established a false narrative which, for over a quarter of a century, has been commercialised by the BBC and others.”
His brother Prince Harry also issued a statement, which said: “Our mother was an incredible woman who dedicated her life to service. She was resilient, brave, and unquestionably honest.
