Motorists told to expect slippy roads as winter wonderland gives way to icy hell

Freezing rain will create “treacherous” driving conditions over the weekend, forecasters have warned.

They fear downpours could freeze on impact with the ground and emergency services are braced for crashes and “significant disruption” to travel.

The Met Office issued a 24-hour Scotland-wide warning which begins at 9pm tonight.

Snow is forecast today for the east and west and 80mph winds for the Hebrides tomorrow.

But warmer air from the south-west on Monday will result in a rapid thaw and temperatures of up to 12C, after more than a week of freezing temperatures.
