Keeping your baby entertained and active is truly beneficial, not just for strengthening their muscles but to develop coordination too! An active day also leads (hopefully) to a better night’s sleep. But you don’t need lots of expensive equipment or plastic toys create a more sustainable view to entertaining baby.
DOING IT FOR THEMSELVES
You may not realise it but every day, your little one is exercising while getting on with just being a baby. Leg kicking, arm waving, hitting at toys and wriggling while you’re trying to change a nappy, he’s very rarely still. It’s nature’s way of helping him get to know where all his muscles are and for his brain to connect with nerves all over the body.
PUMP IT UP
Babies don’t need to pump iron but helping them develop muscle tone has its own benefits. Here are some simple exercises you can do with your baby to get his strength up.
Tummy Time
This is very important for babies. They spend a lot of time on their back (as this is the best advice for safe sleep) and that means they rarely lie on their front unless encouraged to do so.
You can start from the very early days when your baby is a newborn but choose your time wisely. A tired and grumpy baby – or one that is hungry or full of milk – is unlikely to want to be placed on their front. When you feel he’s alert and happy, put him down on a soft mat or blanket on the floor and lie down next to him so you can chat and play with him.
