A MASTER FUL CAREER

Two-time Masters Champion Bernhard Langer looks back on some of his fondest moments as a professional golfer...
GARRETT JOHNSTON
A MASTER FUL CAREER
In late 2021, Bernhard Langer recorded a sixth Charles Schwab Cup title on the Champions Tour. No other player has won the honour more than once. At 64 he’s the oldest to ever win on the tour, and he continues to chase Hale Irwin’s 45–win total with his tally now sitting at 42.

Given what the German has achieved through his long and illustrious career, him breaking more records at the age of 64 should come as no surprise. Every year he seems to feature on the leaderboard at The Masters, despite the course not really suiting his game at this point of his career. That said, he has more experience than virtually anyone else at Augusta and lust for competition few can match. His two Major titles both came in Georgia, in 1985 and 1993, and this year’s Masters marks the 40th anniversary of his debut.

Here, Langer discusses his love affair with Augusta, his longevity, the Ryder Cup and other memories from a storied professional career...

You have 42 DP World Tour wins, second only to Seve all-time. What does that mean to you?

Well it’s always fun to win. It’s what we work for and train for, once you’ve experienced holding up the trophy and that winning feeling, you want to have it again and again. I’ve been very fortunate to have won 118 tournaments worldwide as a pro and I’ve had some great times representing the European Tour in Ryder Cups, Germany in the World Cup and continental Europe in the Hennessy Cup. I’ve played all over the world and seen a lot of things, met a lot of people and had some good times.

What players do you feel have helped shaped the DP World Tour over the past few decades?

Is it Time for the Presidents Cup to Be Scrapped? - The next instalment of the USA v Internationals match takes place in Canada at the end of September. But should the one-sided affair continue?

The next instalment of the USA v Internationals match takes place in Canada at the end of September. But should the one-sided affair continue? Why would anyone even suggest such a drastic course of action? It may sound harsh, but since the inaugural event in 1994, the International team has managed just one victory and one tie while the American team has won 12 times, including nine straight from 2005. It is 26 years since the International team's solitary success in 1998 at Royal Melbourne under the captaincy of the late Peter Thomson.
