ARSENAL FILM

It is hard to argue with Thierry Henry’s assertion in this film that the climax to the 198889 First Division season was the greatest of any league anywhere, ever. Most Arsenal fans will be fully familiar with the salient details of the game, one Arsenal had to win 2-0 against Liverpool at Anfield – the glancing header from Alan Smith, the mobbing of the referee, his conference with the linesman in camera close-up, reminiscent of the 1966 World Cup final, before allowing the goal, 1-0. And then, in the dying seconds, Lee Dixon lofting the ball up to Smith, who swivels and passes it into the space Michael Thomas has decided to dart into, Brian Moore crying “It’s up for grabs now!”. Such is Thomas’s languor that every time I see the clip I half-expect him to send it trundling past the post for a goal-kick.
