If you’re travelling locally or abroad, and depend on chronic medication, what do you do when you lose it?
Friends Tumi and Khanyi had saved up to pay for their dream holiday – 10 days in Paris, France. With her bags packed, hotel booked and chronic medication for epilepsy carefully rationed for her time away, Tumi couldn’t have been more prepared. But four days into the holiday, she lost her medication. The stress caused a seizure and left her with a tension headache. This resulted in a syncopal (fainting) episode, and she was rushed to the hospital where she underwent CT (computed tomography) scans. But because she had no documentation on her illness and her travel insurance didn’t cover pre-existing conditions, she suffered a subarachnoid bleed and tragically died.
