1 Help yourself slowly
There is no easy way to overcome your phobia. To beat it, you’ll have to expose yourself, very gradually, to the thing you’re afraid of.
Don’t worry – there won’t be any nasty shocks. You may have heard of ‘flooding’, where phobics are immersed in a scary situation, but that isn’t what this technique is about.
2 Have a buddy
You’ll stretch your boundaries to the point where you’ll need strong emotional support. You want someone who’ll be supportive and kind but won’t let you get away with things.
3 Use positive affirmations
Either said out loud or in our head, affirmations can influence our focus and remind us there is another way of handling the situation. Here are a few suggestions:
Even though I feel anxious, I will get through this.
I needn’t always feel comfortable, and it isn’t awful when I don’t.
