For women with gynaecological conditions, working out can be an ongoing uphill battle
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and endometriosis (endo) are chronic conditions with symptoms that can prevent some women from getting on with daily activities, including exercise. Dr Rosie Worsley, endocrinologist at Jean Hailes for Women’s Health, explains.
WHAT ARE THESE CONDITIONS?
“Polycystic ovary syndrome is diagnosed when a woman has two out of three of: irregular or absent periods, high testosterone levels or symptoms of high testosterone (like acne or hair loss), and multiple ‘cysts’ on her ovaries,” says Dr Worsley. “Endometriosis is a condition where endometrial cells that normally line the inside of the uterus, start growing outside of the uterus.”
Those with endo may also experience irregular and/or painful periods and severe pelvic pain.
HOW DOES IT AFFECT FITNESS?
