Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Minister Opiyo Wandayi in a press conference explained that the latest round of outages occurred when a 220kV high-voltage transmission tripped off at the Suswa Substation, disrupting the evacuation of 288 megawatts from the Lake Turkana Wind Power (LTWP) plant.
“This was also followed by another trip on the EthiopiaKenya 500kVDC interconnector that was then carrying 200 MW, resulting in a total loss of 488 MW. “The loss of 488 MW, accounting for 27.3% of the total generation resulted in cascade failure and partial collapse of the grid,” said Wandayi.
However, parts of Western Kenya were not affected by the disruption of electricity supply as they were served by the interconnector to Tororo, Uganda. This is the second nationwide blackout within the span of a week. The first one occurred due to the malfunctioning of equipment at the Suswa Power Substation.
