FROM THE start, Diane Colleen Lane lived a tumultuous life. The daughter of an acting coach and a Playboy centerfold who split when she was 13 days old, Diane started acting onstage at 6.

"I was hijacked" into the job, she'd say, making her feel like "an adult hiding in an 8-yearold body." Eventually, dealing with such turmoil made her ideal for the tough-girl roles of her youth- and may have contributed to difficult marriages to exes Christopher Lambert and Josh Brolin.

"Relationships with the opposite sex are the most challenging things I've done," she'd share. "You lose your compass. You're trying to make everybody happy, including yourself.... It's humbled me." Diane let her vulnerability show in her adult roles, including 2002's Unfaithful, for which she got her first and only Oscar nod. Now, as she turns 60 on Jan. 22, Diane has much to celebrate - from her lasting relationship with daughter Eleanor Lambert to a refreshing outlook on her career and life. 1979 LITTLE BITS

At age 13, Diane made her film debut in A Little Romance (with Thelonious Bernard).

"I was so amazed - 'I'm going to be in a movie!"" More amazing? Co-star Laurence Olivier "called me the new Grace Kelly, and it was wonderful. Working with somebody of that caliber, and how it raises the standards of everyone, I had no idea how good I had it. I just thought it was always going to be that professional."

"We were this weird blend of hyperinsecure, hyperoverconfident, which is totally age appropriate," admitted Diane of working with Matt Dillon and her male co-stars on The Outsiders. "I think it was fun to be the only girl surrounded by all that testosterone; every woman needs to experience that once in her life."
