Despite being a proud mum-of-three, TV presenter Alex Jones is all too aware of the struggles that many people face in order to start a family.
While The One Show host fell pregnant with five-year-old son Teddy relatively easily, conceiving her second son, Kit, now three, wasn’t plain sailing. The star, 45, who’s married to insurance broker Charlie Thomson and is also mum to 16-month-old daughter Annie, later admitted she’d been “naive” to think she’d have no problem falling pregnant.
“I hadn’t thought about it [when I was younger],” confesses Alex, who gave birth to Teddy at the age of 39. “I thought, ‘We’ll try and have a baby, and that’ll be lovely. And then a baby will arrive.’”
In 2016, shortly before her pregnancy with Teddy, Alex feared that she might be one of the 3.5 million people in the UK who struggle to conceive. She presented the documentary Alex Jones – Fertility & Me to explore the various issues surrounding the topic.
Now, she’s back with a new show, Alex Jones: Making Babies, which sees the former Strictly star train as a fertility assistant at King’s Fertility, a clinic in south London.
Here, as she opens up about the difficulties she and husband Charlie faced before welcoming Kit into the world, she acknowledges what “a privilege” it is to be a mother and highlights the “heartache and the physical pain” that goes into having children…
Hi, Alex! As a working mum, you must have your hands full. How do you cope?
