After sixty-five years of marriage, a much-loved grandmother in her eighties had demanded a divorce, seemingly out of the blue. Instead of supporting her, everyone was shocked. It was not because of the taboo that divorce still is, it was that all those who saw her as a safe space – her children, grandchildren, daughters and sons-in-law, relatives, family friends – all of whom she had nurtured for decades, felt threatened because dida-dadu (grandma and grandpa) were a unit. The collapse of their marriage threatened their idea of morality, of what was right in the world, of love, of safety. They were protecting themselves over supporting their fragile grandma.
