The sensitive subject of organ donation needn't be a taboo topic
The ultimate GIFT

Talking about organ donation can seem morbid, but it could ensure that you and your loved ones understand what each other wants, so there's less stress should anything happen. Here's what you need to know about this enormous act of human generosity.

WHAT IS ORGAN DONATION?

Organ donation gives someone in need of a transplant the chance of a longer, healthier life and more precious time with their family. Sadly, more than 400 people a year die while waiting for an organ transplant and more than 7,000 people are currently on the UK Transplant Waiting List.

'Organ donation is and always will be a precious gift,' says Anthony Clarkson, director of organ and tissue donation and transplantation at NHS Blood and Transplant. This amazing act can save or transform the lives of up to nine people - more by donating tissue.

THE LAW

The law has changed so as to make organ donation an opt-out system in England, Wales and Scotland (if you live in Northern Ireland and wish to be a donor, you will need to opt-in to organ and tissue donation by joining the NHS Organ Donor Register).

'Opt-out' means if you're over 18 you're considered to have agreed to be an organ donor when you die, unless you have recorded a decision not to donate, or you're in one of the excluded groups. This law change helps more people who are waiting for a transplant.
