CUT FABRICS
Cut pieces in the following order.
Designer Jacquelynne Steves prefers to make her foundation squares larger than necessary and trim them to size. To use this method, cut 25 light print 2⅛x9" strips instead of the 2⅛x8½" and 2⅛x8½" strips specified here.
Patterns are on Pattern Sheet 4. To use fusible web for appliquéing, complete the following steps. For more details, see "Fusible-Web Method," page 79.
1. Lay fusible web, paper side up, over patterns. Use a pencil to trace each pattern the number of times indicated in cutting instructions, leaving ½" between tracings. Cut out each fusible-web shape roughly ¼" outside traced lines.
To reduce bulk in her project, before fusing the fusible-web shapes to the fabric Jacquelynne trimmed away their centers, leaving ½"-wide fusible-web frames.
2. Following manufacturer's instructions, press each fusible-web shape onto wrong side of designated fabric; let cool. Cut out fabric shapes on drawn lines. Peel off paper backings.
ASSEMBLE FOUNDATION SQUARES
1. Referring to Diagram 1, lay out four assorted light print 2⅛x8½" strips and one light print 2x8½" strip. Using scant ¼" seams, join strips to make a foundation square. Press seams in one direction. The foundation square should be 8½" square including seam allowances.
2. Repeat Step 1 to make five foundation squares total.
