TIPS TO REJUVENATE -YOUR HOME FOR SPRING
The Home Handyman
|September/October 2023
With Spring upon us, many South Africans will be considering how to refresh their homes - perhaps to place it on the market (it is a time of the year when many people sell) or to have it looking its best for the braai's and entertaining of friends and family.
-
It's always such a relief when the light and warmth start to return after a long and cold winter. While we all get excited to refresh our spring wardrobe, we don't always think about making seasonal changes to our homes. It can be fun and inspiring to bring some renewed spring energy and colour into our living spaces, which can motivate us for the new season.
So how do you start to 'springify' your house without completely redecorating or over-investing? "There are plenty of small ways to bring light, colour and vibrance into your home that can enhance the feeling of seasonal change without breaking the bank. It's all about being creative and exciting the senses," says Phethile Mtshali, Mr Price Home.
Spring cleaning - (dust) busting 10 DIY and home renovation myths
Spring is also a time of the year when more people start to think about getting their homes ready to go on the market or to host summer get-togethers. However, before you begin, there are some myths that should be busted before mistakes are made!
To help you decipher fact from fiction, Orlando Luis, CEO of Brights Hardware, a leading independent hardware retailer, has tackled some home improvement myths to help you before you embark on a little remodelling.
Myth 1: All the money spent on upgrades will be recouped when you sell
"There's a common misconception among homeowners that they can add the full cost of any improvements made to the price tag of their home when it's time to sell. Unfortunately, this is not always the case, and if you overcapitalise on your home renovations then you run the risk of either overpricing your house when you do decide to sell, causing it to sit on the market for too long, or you run the risk of losing money," cautions Luis.

Highlighting the scale of the problem, Sihle Zikalala, Deputy Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, noted at the 2025 International Construction Law Association Conference that South Africa is spending considerable amounts of money due to disputes within the construction sector.
