I’ve been a technology journalist for years, but the Amazfit Balance marks my first encounter with the brand. Amazfit, a subsidiary of Zepp Health (formerly Huami), claims to be the world’s largest wearable device company and serves as Xiaomi’s exclusive provider of wearable tech. This partnership is evident in shared features like the PAI (Physiological Activity Indicator) score. However, the Zepp app and Zepp OS powering the Balance are far more advanced than Xiaomi’s Mi Fitness app, even on their Wear OS-powered Mi Watch 2 Pro.
The Amazfit Balance is designed to compete with Fitbit, Garmin, and Huawei devices, while maintaining independence by being compatible with both iOS and Android. Priced at $352, and often discounted below $300, it’s a value packed option.
However, its ambitious feature set can feel overwhelming. The device has a bioelectric body composition sensor like Samsung, Garminlike customizable workouts, Readiness score like Fitbit, and many 2024 flagship features like dual-band GPS, offline mapping, and even sleep apnea detection. Despite its comprehensive offerings, the watch suffers from redundancy, with overlapping metrics like Readiness Score, PAI, and Exertion Level delivering similar activity level insights.
