SHISHARANNI: A Sacred Ritual of Blood, Sacrifice, and Divine Connection
Incredible Goa
|March 2025
In the heart of Goa, a unique and powerful ritual called Shisharanni is performed once every three years during the vibrant Shigmo festival at the Shri Mallikarjun Temple in Avem-Khotigao, Canacona.
This ritual, deeply rooted in tradition, evokes awe, curiosity, and even fear due to its intense nature. But for the people who participate in it, it's much more than just a blood-chilling spectacle-it's an expression of devotion, sacrifice, and belief that transcends the physical boundaries of the human body.
The Ritual Itself: A Rare Blend of Tradition and Faith
Shisharanni is a blend of two words-shisha, a type of tree, and Ranni, meaning a traditional cooking place. The ritual takes place in the sacred space of the Shri Mallikarjun Temple, with devotees from not only Goa but also from neighboring regions such as Karwar flocking to participate in or witness the event. The practice is centered around three men, known as gades, who are believed to be the temporary earthly representatives of God. They serve as vessels for divine energy during the ritual, carrying out acts that symbolize sacrifice, protection, and divine connection.
On the day of the ritual, these three gades lay down on the ground, their heads covered with a wet cloth and layers of plantain trunk. This is done to form a sacred cooking place, which serves as the foundation for the ritual. An earthen pot filled with rice is placed on their heads.
The pot, which rests upon the three men, is then heated by the burning branches of the Shisha tree beneath it. This creates a makeshift cooking stove, similar to the traditional cooking methods used by Goan villagers, symbolizing a link between the divine and the earth.
