Luxury fitness equipment purveyor, Cycling Bears, proves that sustainability is more than a buzzword-it’s a lifestyle that we need to espouse for the sake of posterity and ourselves.
IF THERE WERE an award for one of the most ubiquitous words of the century, ‘sustainability’ would take the prize. Across industries, the buzzword has been used in countless reports, campaigns and marketing activations. Marketing rhetoric or not, however, any effort to preserve our planet is much welcomed in our books.
Closer to home, luxury health and wellness lifestyle brand, Cycling Bears, has always been an advocate of environmental responsibility. Cofounder Debra Tay recalls eagerly awaiting “hard rubbish collection day” when she was growing up in Australia. Occurring just twice a year, it was when residents could place large items at the kerb for pick-up. During these collections, she often saw treadmills, ellipticals and other bulky exercise equipment being discarded.
“I became increasingly aware of the overflowing landfills and how Australia was shipping its waste overseas. Now, living in Singapore and knowing that our Semakau Landfill is already half full, this concern weighs heavily on my mind,” reflects Tay.
Also recognising the prevalence of “subpar equipment that frequently failed to meet users’ needs”, along with their short lifespan, Tay and her husband, Tudi Guillamot, decided to up the ante in the luxury fitness equipment space and launched Cycling Bears in 2022.
