START SMALL
When you’re starting out, gathering inspiration and developing a garden plan is riveting. But it’s so easy to get lost in Pinterest boards and garden-design books, forgetting one of the most vital aspects of a new garden – starting small. Tending to a new garden is time-consuming, particularly if you’ve never gardened. Going too big can quickly lead to an untidy garden full of half-dead plants, crushing your confidence and taking the fun out of the process. Assess your commitment before you start and pick space and plants you know you can handle to avoid disappointment down the line.
CHOOSE A LOCATION
Deciding on a location for your new garden will dictate all of its future aspects, from the plants you choose to the maintenance required. Luckily, there is a long list of options to make gardening accessible to literally anyone. If you have a traditional garden, dedicate space for your new plants by installing a raised bed or removing the existing lawn. Those with outdoor space but no open ground (like courtyards, for example) can invest in a few stylish pots to start an overflowing container garden. Even those without any outdoor space can start a garden by purchasing a few houseplants. No matter your living space, there is a way to make it work.
