At Trent Bridge, Sophie Ecclestone put in an Ashes performance for the ages, as she single-handedly dragged England through a match they would have lost a long time ago without her.
On day four yesterday, she claimed her second five-wicket haul of the match, finishing with figures of five for 63, to go along with her five for 129 in the first innings. In total, she bowled an eye-watering 77.1 overs. Across the legendary Shane Warne’s 145-Test career, there were just five instances in which he bowled more.
Her final and 10th wicket, that of Australia’s No11 Darcie Brown, was given LBW and confirmed on review. The England team watched the replay from almost the other side of the ground after Ecclestone’s wild celebrations had seen the whole team sprint in unison after their runaway spinner. When DRS confirmed the decision, Ecclestone sank to the ground in exhausted delight. It was the second-most overs bowled in a Test by an England women’s cricketer ever, the fourth-best match figures in England women’s history (10 for 192) and just the second time an English women’s player had taken a five-wicket-haul in both innings.
