And the fish dish, with its distinctive aroma, has a new generation of fans, according to a survey.

Invented by accident in Great Yarmouth during the 16th century when a fisherman hung a herring too close to a fire and woke up find it smoked, it used to be a breakfast staple for many.

It was hugely popular in the early 20th century but by the 1970s was out of fashion.
