SEASON-OPENER: KILLARNEY'S THRILLS AND HEAVES

- Charl Bosch

GR Cup scary and exciting

"Just go out there and have fun," were the words my colleagues Mark Jones and Jaco van der Merwe flung at me as I prepared for my first ever race in the Toyota GR Cup at the Killarney last week.

With one pre-season shakedown at Zwartkops under the belt in the GR Yaris, more questions than answers prevailed as I set foot on Killarney for the first time to partake in the fourth edition of the racing series between media titles.

While Kyle Kock (Carmag) and Lawrence Minnie (AutoTrader) had done some racing in the past, Phuti Mpyane (TimesLive) and Nabil Abdool (SuperSport) were two unknowns. That left Willem van de Putte (IOL/Independent) and myself as the real novices.

We would share the track with Toyota GR Academy drivers, fresh from karting and racing the GR86s, and select Toyota dealers campaigning the GR Corolla driven by the media last year.
