Red Sea No sign of oil spill after attack on ship, says EU

The area around a Greek-flagged tanker attacked last week by Yemen's Houthi rebels appears to be free of oil, the EU mission in the Red Sea has said.

Red Sea No sign of oil spill after attack on ship, says EU

The tanker was targeted last week by projectiles off Yemen's port city of Hodeidah. The Houthis, who control Yemen's most populous regions, said they were behind the attack.

The Pentagon had said earlier that MV Sounion was still on fire and may be leaking crude oil. The tanker is carrying 150,000 tonnes of crude oil and if a spill occurs it has the potential to be among the largest ever from a ship.

A Pentagon spokesperson, Maj Gen Patrick Ryder, said on Tuesday that a third party had tried to send two tugs to help salvage the Sounion but the Houthis threatened to attack them.
