Crumbling state of city's Tinside Pool

A NEW, major examination of defects at Plymouth's Tinside Lido is to be carried out after it was previously revealed the pool complex was in need of £500,000 in urgent repairs.

The expert survey will take up to a year but Plymouth City Council stress the Grade II listed lido is safe for swimmers to use.

Meanwhile, scaffolding has gone up with a separate regeneration project currently underway - and the pool remains open. But aside from this work, a further inspection has now been ordered after a 2022 study highlighted more than 140 defects including cracks, leaks and corrosion in the main building and pool.

The report said the sea wall has striking defects, including a huge crack which is letting in water, and two pillars which are in danger of coming loose.

But yesterday the council said a further examination was required by specialists but remained adamant the pool is safe for bathers to use.

A council spokesperson said: "Tinside Lido remains a safe place for swimmers. As it is a listed structure on the seafront, its stunning location comes with the obvious challenges of constant wave action, salt and storm damage.
