Drama as WW2 'bomb' found in back garden

RESIDENTS had to be evacuated from their homes yesterday after a suspected World War Two bomb was found in a back garden in Keyham.

People living in St Michael Avenue and St Aubyn Avenue were alerted by officers from Devon and Cornwall Police about the find, and a cordon of 200m around the property was set up.

Police declared a major incident due to the suspect ordnance, and were advising people to avoid the area where possible.

The Royal Navy’s EOD (explosive ordnance disposal) team were called in to examine the device after police were called at around 10.30am yesterday.

The man who discovered the large suspected bomb said he initially spotted the mystery object “about a week ago” and had hit the unexploded ordnance with a spade. The man said he was helping dig out the rear yard of his daughter’s home with a builder, with the aim of preparing the ground for an extension.
