A 22-year-old man was handed a suspended sentence despite causing ‘in excess’ of £50,000 damage to a historic Plymouth building and an expensive painting owned by Plymouth City Council.
During a sentencing hearing at Plymouth Crown Court prosecutor Ed Bailey explained that the painting – originally described in court as being by Sir Joshua Reynolds – was actually a large 2.9m by 3.9m piece of art by Benjamin Robert Haydon, titled Judgement of Solomon.
He explained that Declan Banks, of Nelson Street, Greenbank, had initially pleaded not guilty to the charges, but later admitted to two counts of criminal damage.
Mr Bailey said that at the time of the offence the building was undergoing repairs and scaffolding had been erected around part of it.
