Mine 'could go bust' after £9.1m loss revealed

PLYMOUTH’S troubled tungsten mine is in danger of going bust next year after making a £9.1m loss in just six months.

Bosses at the Hemerdon mine, near Plympton, remain committed to reopening the facility, but have warned that if new funding is not found it may become insolvent in March.

Just 15 people are working full-time at the vast open-cast mine now, after cost-cutting and redundancies. And in a statement to investors, Tungsten West Plc revealed there remains “material uncertainty” regarding further funding for the project and said if new sources of finance can’t be found it is anticipated the company may no longer be able to meet its liabilities as they fall due in March 2024.
