Alice, a part-time cleaner in London who uses an app to get gigs, is obsessed with one of her customers.

Inside the mind of a woman obsessed

She has cleaned singleton Tom's flat every Wednesday morning for a year and fallen for him, despite never having met him. She uses his toothbrush, lies on his bed and imagines sharing his life.

The story is told from Alice's point of view and she is clearly an unreliable narrator. She refers to Tom as if he were a deity, with a capital "H". ("I bide my time, waiting for the perfect moment to rest a light hand on Him, to tap that shoulder, call His name.") One major contrivance is that Tom, despite having a stranger over at his house, does not have a password on his easily accessible computer, allowing Alice to look through his calendar and e-mails.

With this, she starts cancelling appointments and pretends to be him to send out e-mails.
