Quintin Lake
Architectural and landscape photographer
You originally trained as an architect. Did this stand you in good stead for the transition to becoming a photographer?
Very much so. The education combines art and technical thinking, the balance of which, like architecture, is essential in photography. As a student, there are weekly crits where you pin up your work and it gets eviscerated by invited jurors! It makes you tough.
Are you a trained photographer?
Yes and no. I studied a lot of photography and visual thinking at university. When I started transitioning my career, I spent a year of extensive reading and online study to pick up more technical skills. I also learnt how to use a large format view camera (pre-digital).
