Opponents York hungry to make most of free hit

WIGAN Athletic get the ball rolling in the FA Cup second round on Friday night – and must be wary of a York City side primed to cause a shock.

The tie is being televised on BBC Two and means the League One Latics will pocket a £60,000 broadcast fee.

But a place in the third round could be even more valuable with the big guns set to enter the fray in the new year.

Hosts York can’t be taken for granted even though they are battling at the ugly end of the National League and have so many injury problems that simply fielding a team may prove difficult.

York assistant manager Neil Cox, who reached the FA Cup final as a player with Middlesbrough in 1997, said: “It’s a one-off game and you can put all your worries to bed. You can forget the league.

Forget the pressure. You know if you play well on the day and they don’t turn up then you could actually beat them.

“That’s why people love the FA Cup, because everyone’s got a chance.
