This is a portrait of a 50-year-old female elephant from Phinda, a private game reserve in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province. It's a truly incredible place to experience the region's wildlife, with elephants, rhinos, lions, leopards and buffalo occupying the 115sq miles of reserve.
I was keen to photograph as many different animals as possible, but top of my list was a close-up of a larger mammal like an elephant or rhino. Their size lends itself perfectly to fullframe photographs like this one, which can be hard to pull off with smaller subjects.
