1 Make an easy table runner

If your garden table is looking a little weather-worn and not at its best for summer activities, then cover it up with a colourful cloth or paper runner. For an inexpensive alternative to a shop-bought runner, make your own using a roll of wallpaper leftover from a DIY project. Simply roll out a length to cover the table and once your meal or party is over, simply dispose of it with no worry about spills and stains. Alternatively, use a roll of plain drawing paper and provide crayons or pens for little ones to sketch on and decorate the runner as they sit - a great way to keep them entertained during a meal.

2 HANG UP RIBBON STREAMERS

Glam up a plain outdoor chandelier by decorating it with bright ribbons and silk flowers. Use it to hang above a garden table it'll take up less space than a table setting-or hang from the branches of a tree as a party centrepiece. No need for tricky bows-just loosely knot lengths of ribbon and coloured yarn and attach faux blooms with invisible tape. We chose different flowers for variety, but for a more classic look, stick to one type and colour.

3 SET UP A GARDEN TIKI BAR

Give your outdoor space a holiday vibe with a fun bar taking centre stage. Invest in a ready-made timber bar or create your own using reclaimed pallet wood - a simple structure with a drop-down bar table is perfect and fairly simple to build. Show your creative side with a colourful paint finish in zingy shades. Simply paint different sections in contrasting colours for a vibrant backdrop for your cocktail kit. Finish off by adding painted chalkboard menu boards to let guests know what's on offer.
