Use... sociable seating
Create an inviting outdoor living area with a comfortable seating arrangement
* CREATE ZONES Whatever the size of your outdoor space, zoning can be useful to divide the space up into different areas, so there's somewhere to sit and relax, prepare food and entertain or for the kids to play in.
* START WITH THE SEATING Instead of a randomly-placed assortment of furniture, try to group seating in a dedicated area. Choose a spot that lets you take in a lovely view or gives some natural shade, and set up seating in a sociable corner or U-shaped arrangement as you would with an indoor living area.
* MAKE IT MODULAR For a flexible set-up, go for modular garden furniture that can be arranged to suit the shape and size of your patio area - and easily rearranged if needed. Outdoor pouffes and floor cushions are easily moved around and are handy for extra guests.
* CHANGE THE BACKDROP A contrasting wall colour or a change of flooring can be a good way of signposting different zones. Paint brickwork or fencing behind seating in a bold shade or go for patterned tiles or an outdoor rug as an anchor point.
Use... a well-planned layout
Set up an alfresco cooking area as the hub of your outdoor space
* FIND THE RIGHT SPOT Whether your outdoor cooking space consists of a trusty barbecue or a brick-built design, choosing the right spot is key. Fairly close to the house makes it easier if electrics or plumbing are required - and avoids a long trek when bringing things in or out of the kitchen.
