If this season makes the dull pain of an old grudge feel more like a fresh wound, you’re not alone. “The holidays make us more sensitive emotionally,” says psychologist Robert Enright, PhD. “We look back at times when we were treated unjustly, and that hurt becomes more acute.” He adds that just knowing this happens to everyone will help you feel more connected to others and begin to let go of the hurt.

“Anger is a twofold emotion stemming from pain and disappointment,” says psycho therapist Erin Leonard, PhD. “It signals something unfair happened to you, and it’s important to honor that.” Acknowledging your anger will help you pinpoint ways to hold others accountable while forgiving them at the same time.
