OVER THE YEARS MANY PEOPLE HAVE HEARD ME SAY: “The brilliance in any
solution is making something complicated appear so simple.” I think that saying holds so much truth in medicine and our health.

Every month we try to provide a diverse offering of health care topics that simplify the information. We cover advancements in care, cures, and educate our readers about a disease or malady that may affect them, their loved ones or someone they know.

We are living in a world driven by technology. Our high-tech world that focuses on doing things faster and better. And while we have made our world better, along the way we often ignore our health. Make no mistake, medicine has improved. Technology is alive and well in medicine. And, while technology gives physicians the ability to diagnose and treat better than ever with such great tools at their disposal, the irony of all this technology is it gives physicians – and we lay people – a report card on how bad we are treating our bodies.

Years ago, depression wasn't taken very seriously.  "Shake it off" was typically the cure.  We didn't know how depression could affect someone at the time.  But things changes and as a culture, we have become more aware of how much of the population is affected by depression and how dangerous depression can be.

March is Colon Cancer Month and in years past I had been able to report how more people over 50  were getting screened and the rate of colon cancer was dropping.  For years, the general feeling was that over 50 was the bench mark to get screened.  This month I received some alarming news.  While the rate for colon cancer is down for the over 50 crowd - the baby boomers - our children and grandchildren have become serious risks for colon cancer - in their 20s and 30s and we don't know why.

February is Heart Health Month and as any good consumer health magazine should, we have included several 'good reads' about heart health.  Still, about 610,00 people die of heart disease in the United States every year - that's 1 in every 4 deaths.  These surprising numbers should send a strong message to our readers - you can't fix heart disease in February alone.  It's a 12 month a year, seven day a week challenge.  Don't be a statistic.  Take care of your heart and your health.

Every now and then it's ok to break tradition - or as David frost said - to take a road less traveled.  In this issue of A Wellness Update, we are breaking tradition and have decided to produce an issue that is without a structured theme.  But then again, maybe we did pick a theme: "Something for everyone".

Celebrities often lend their name and fame for great causes.  They pick a cause, a community issue or a disease and 'endorse the cause'.  In this issue we had the opportunity to interview Kathy Bates on her battle with Lymphedema. 

In November of 1979, while introducing a "60 Minutes" segment on what was becoming a new health movement, Dan Rather said "Wellness--there's a word you don't hear every day." While the first Wellness center opened in the late 1960s-early 1970s we can find the word rooted in ancient history as far back as 3000 BC.  Now more than half a century later wellness is part of our everyday life.

Scientists have said the human body should last at least 150 years.  Yet the life expectancy of an average American male today is about 76 years – nearly half of what science says.  The good news is that we are doing a lot better than the turn of the century when the average life expectancy for a male was about 46 years.

The beginning of a new year often signals change. As individuals, we make resolutions to go on a diet, spend more
time with our family, exercise, be a better
person and so on.

With each What Doctors Know issue, we try to focus on the “disease of the month”. You can search the internet and ﬁnd all sorts of public awareness campaigns and their corresponding months, weeks or day.
Perhaps the most infamous awareness campaign falls in the month of October…Breast Cancer Awareness month. You see pink everywhere during that time. You can’t watch television without seeing something that brings awareness to breast cancer. The NFL, NCAA and even High Schools wear pink to show their support of breast cancer research. So you might expect a magazine issue totally dedicated to breast cancer. But we wanted to take a slightly diﬀerent direction for this issue celebrating the months of November and December.

In the United States, we are killing more people with prescription
pads than guns. In 2010, there were 16,451 accidental prescription
drug overdoses. In that same year, there were 16,259 homicides.
Accidental means the overdoses could have been prevented. America’s
answer to better health is to “fix it with a pill” without any thoughts to
the repercussions and dangers of mixing prescriptions with other
prescriptions or over the counter medications, taking medications
prescribed to someone else or simply not following the dosage instructions.

Try not to smile when you see a toddler joyously navigating an electric
car through a maze of objects with a giddy grin on his face as wide as the
Grand Canyon. There’s something infectious about an innocent smile.
