BIOGRAPHY OF A ROOM

WHAT MATTERS TO YOU?

Imagine waking up to work by Jasper Johns, Ed Ruscha, and Louise Bourgeois. Or imagine it’s Gustav Klimt, Henri Matisse, and Edvard Munch. The first is the personal collection of the star of our cover, gallerist Craig Starr; the second was that of the late Leonard Lauder. Starr says in our story, which showcases the apartment he created with designer Charlie Ferrer.

ARCHITECTURE OF TIME

Everyone loves a good comeback. With the 2025 Privé Tank à Guichets, Cartier has resurrected one of its archives' most eccentric pieces. The Guichets (French for “ticket window”) is the classic Tank reduced to almost elemental form. Released in 1928 at the height of the Art Deco era and famously worn by Duke Ellington, the timepiece has no dial and no hands—just two tiny apertures displaying hours and minutes. Nearly a century later its bold minimalism still feels like a challenge to watchmaking writ large.
