Agentle rhythmic thump and thwack from the adjacent tennis club brings a surprising sense of calm to this seaside home in Kent, where abstract artist Caroline Yates and her osteopath husband, Graham, live and work. It was this idyllic location on a Victorian square, a stone’s throw from Deal’s pebble beach, that prompted the couple to make the move from East Dulwich 16 years ago with their twin sons, Milo and Lucian, who were two at the time. ‘We’d visited Whitstable just up the coast and loved it, but this area was more our budget. So, when this unprepossessing house with a pebble dash front came on the market, we jumped at the chance. It had huge potential for creating studio spaces for us to work from,’ says Caroline.
