IN BLACK & WHITE

Toon heroes write names in history
- CHRIS MCKENNA

THE banner told them what to do. Write your names in the history books.

Dan Burn and Alexander Isak did just that. But so did every player in black and white at Wembley.

Eddie Howe (left), too. He became the first English manager to win a major domestic trophy since Harry Redknapp led Portsmouth to the FA Cup in 2008.

Everyone connected to Newcastle United will feel they were part of history here.

Their 70-year wait for a domestic trophy is over. Or the 56-year wait for any silverware, if you include the InterCities Fairs Cup of 1969.

Finally the Magpies can rejoice. The hurt is over. For the first time since they beat Manchester City in the 1955 FA Cup final, they can celebrate lifting a trophy at Wembley.

Many of those inside the stadium yesterday will have been seeing black and white ribbons on a trophy for the first time.

Any pictures of that success back in the 1950s were in black and white, of course. They'll have vivid and colourful memories of this forever, though.
