A GREAT grandmother known as “Mrs Poppy” is celebrating her 80th year selling poppies for the Royal British Legion. Vera Parnaby has raised around £1m for veterans and started volunteering after her father died while serving on a British Army base. The tragedy, when Vera was three, left her, her sister and two brothers with their mum Elizabeth in Annfield Plain, County Durham. Elizabeth helped launch the women’s section of the Royal British Legion and sold poppies with her children, which is where Vera, of Consett, County Durham, fell in love with the fundraising. Now 85, Vera is one of the longest serving poppy sellers in the UK, but said: “It isn’t about me, it’s about the soldiers it helps.” The pensioner is now urging youngsters to get involved, saying: “I would encourage any young people to sign up to help. We live in a better world now because of those who gave their lives.” Durham Poppy Appeal manager Lisa Tempest-Hall said: “Vera’s dedication has rightly earned her the nickname of Mrs Poppy.”
