RETAILER WHSmith is set to disappear from the high street after selling its 500 stores for £76million.The company's shops will be taken over by Modella Capital and eventually rebranded as TG Jones.Its chief executive Carl Cowling described the move as a "pivotal moment". But the sale does not include its travel locations or the WHSmith brand.The retailer - which employs 5,000 staffhas been shifting its focus away from town centres.It now has more than 580 branches in airports, hospitals, railway stations and motorway service areas.Mr Cowling said: "As our travel business has grown, our UK high street business has become a much smaller part of the WHSmith Group."Now is the right time for a new owner to take the high street business forward."WHSmith has struggled with declining sales, making only £32m profit in the year ending August 2024.
