Decide on mercy plea of Beant Singh assassin, else we will, SC tells Centre
The Morning Standard

THE Supreme Court on Monday said it would consider the mercy petition of death row convict Balwant Singh Rajoana, who was convicted in the 1995 assassination case of then Punjab CM Beant Singh, if the Centre does not decide on the matter "either way".
"Decide it one way or the other or we will consider Rajoana's plea," the bench told Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, after he informed the court that the mercy plea was pending with the President's house.
A three-judge bench, led by Justice B R Gavai, said, "No interim relief without hearing them (Punjab)," and deferred the hearing for two weeks.
The court was hearing Rajoana's plea regarding the delay in deciding his mercy petition.
