The global Metal Cutting Machine Tools (MCMT) market size was valued at USD 76 billion in 2022, projected to grow at a CAGR of 4.8 percent in the next five years, according to a recent Fortune Business Insights report. India is among the world’s biggest metal-cutting machine tools markets, with sectors like automotive, general engineering, energy, and aerospace being the major demand drivers. The industry faced one of its biggest challenges in recent history, with more than two years of uncertain growth, affected by global demand headwinds. In recent months, the sector has started to witness a level of activity and demand close to the pre-pandemic levels and that excitement is being seen around this year’s IMTEX, which is drawing exhibitors and visitors from India and overseas in large numbers. Our current issue focuses on the operations and growth plans of companies that are participating in the exhibition. Industry thought leaders who shared insights with us included Gautam K. We in the media love to spot a revolution. A quick glance at today’s news shows me that we are in the throes of at least three. An OTT (Over-the-Top) revolution, a Khaadi revolution, and a “new green” revolution are all underway as I write. While I have no doubt that all these are trends of great import, I haven’t heard any news about people clashing on the streets over who will get to watch Netflix or wear a Khaadi shirt. 
Or perhaps the kind of ‘revolution’ that the media reports refer to are what Merriam-Webster defines as the type of revolution that causes “a changeover in use or preference especially in technology.”  Even if so, I wish experts were more diligent about using this term. That they would call an event or a trend a revolution only when it causes a real changeover, or as they say in consultant-speak, a paradigm shift. 
Let me give you an example of what I mean from the world of manufacturing. For many years now, analysts have been telling us that the fourth industrial revolution (IR) has arrived in the country.  Numbers, however, tell a different story. This year’s NASSCOM’s AI (Artificial Intelligence) Adoption Index, which covers industrial and automotive sectors, files our industry under the category of “enthusiast” on the AI maturity scale. Artificial Intelligence, as you know, is a key 4th IR technology. I’d argue that, while it’s great to be enthusiastic about a technology, we need a far stronger sentiment than that to start a revolution.

LEADERS AND ORGANIZATIONS HAVING THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON INDIA’S MACHINE TOOLS INDUSTRY

It is understood that the second World War was won as much by machine tools as by machine guns.  The Japanese call them “mother machines” because they make all the machines possible.  The machine tools industry forms the backbone of the manufacturing industry worldwide, as it does in India. The World Machine Tool Survey 2021 put the Indian Machine Tool Industry at 11th in production and eighth in consumption globally. Presently estimated at about  Rs. 6,000 crore, the industry is expected to see significant growth in the coming year, as industries around the country start operating at optimal capacity in the new normal.

Indian Manufacturing: How to Achieve Gender Parity

 Six women industry professionals share valued experiences, perspectives, and advice on how to increase the participation of women in the Indian manufacturing sector, which is among the lowest across sectors

Selling Product as a Service
Much like a lot of Indian things, our manufacturing sector offers something to both the pessimist and the optimist.
The optimist will look at the sector’s meagre share of 3 percent in the global manufacturing output, alarmingly low when compared with other large economies – China (20 percent), Japan (10 percent), and of course, the US (18 percent). This, when one does not consider the manufacturing output per capita, which makes our present ranking look even bleaker. In terms of performance, our both our labor and capital productivities fare low. Compared with China and South Korea, for example, our productivity level, measured in GVA output per full-time-equivalent worker, is four times lower.  Sector-wise disparities are even greater – South Korea’s electronics manufacturing sector, for instance, is 18 times more productive than India’s. Even more, Indian manufacturers ostensibly operate well below their maximum capacity, with utilization ranging from 60 to 70 percent across sectors, according to RBI data.

Keep it simple
Give us a simple story. Not a complex, layered story. 
A famous Bollywood actress, now a successful TV soap producer, said this to us years ago, to my then co-writer and me, after we had pitchedto her a story for a TV serial. “People want a hero they like and identify with and a villain that they hate. Don’t give us shades of grey, give us black and white.” I remember come back from the meeting disappointed, angry – and a bit disillusioned about the whole business of storytelling. 
It took years for me to realize that she was absolutely right. People are moved by simple stories. Stories of love, of sacrifice, of evil versus good. 
Life, however, is not that simple. Nor is any story that is true to life. We are complex creatures. Each one of us has a good side and a dark side. Therefore, telling a simple story is hard – harderwhen the subject itself is complex and layered.
Climate crisis is one such subject. Both climate activists and the skeptics have some pretty strong arguments to make. The activists – largely ignored until they gained mainstream popularity with Al Gore’s famous 2006 documentary, An Inconvenient Truth – cite science-backed data and evidence to say that the world is staring at a catastrophe

The week-long conference that concluded with an awards function covered the whole spectrum of industry verticals – automotive, aerospace, consumer electronics, healthcare, machine tools, and software solutions, to name a few. Over here I want to tell you what has not been shared at any of these media platforms. And that is the names of people who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this enormous undertaking possible.

If team DMI was an orchestra – in many ways it was; it churned out a highly successful production this year – then Dinesh Mishra, VP Strategy, MeshMix Media was this orchestra’s conductor, producer, the cellist, the trumpeter, the bassist, and the person who managed stage lighting andthe box office, all rolled into one. Dinesh was the person who reached out to the dignitaries, got in the speakers, convinced the sponsors (not easy in these times, even tougher for a small media house), one who lit up the social media with event updates, and the one who ensured that all the parts moved flawlessly. I’ve lost count of moments when we in the team thought that this is it, we cannot make it happen, when it was only Dinesh’s grit, his fighter’s spirit, and a lot of savvy that saw this important event through.

Asking The Right Questions
Why does India – the world’s 5th largest economy and the second most populous country – contribute only 3 percent to the world's manufacturing output (China does 28.4 percent, the US, 16.6 percent)?
What will it take for us to excel in exports where we add maximum value to the supply chain?
In what ways can India's space program help the growth of local space and aerospace industry?
Would India benefit more from becoming an industrial economy than a service-oriented economy?
So many questions, so little time.
At Dynamic Manufacturing India magazine, we ask questions that are important, even if not comfortable. And that is okay. That is the job of a magazine that seeks to relay the voice of the industry. THE AEROSPACE INDUSTRY: BRUISED AND IMPROVED

The pandemic hit the global aerospace industry like a sledge hammer. The otherwise resilient industry has been pummeled by a formidable, invisible enemy that has gone for the industry’s jugular:international flight services – and to a lesser extent, domestic travel – have barely functioned since the start of the crisis.
 
Like many other industries, aerospace has been wholly unprepared to deal with the pandemic as it has faced a crisis of this kind for the first time in its history.The last pandemic of such scale and fury was the devastating Spanish flu of 1918-19;that was when aerospace had yet to become a global industry.Most aviation activity was limited to wartime use and pioneering flights. For perspective, in 1919, Boeing company was only three years old and British fliers Captain John Alcock and Lieutenant Arthur Whitten Brown had made the first ever flight across the Atlantic Ocean.

The Age of Digitalization

The current issue is focused on digitalization. Three longform articles, in particular, of the current issue contain detailed and in-depth information on how manufacturing companies are using digitalization to boost performance in ways that could not have been imagined only a few years before. 
For example, in the cover feature titled ‘The Era of Digital Transformation’, six senior industry executives from the machine-tools sector share unvarnished and useful accounts of the challenges that the pandemic has thrown in the way of the machine tool builders. And how digital technologies are helping them overcome many of these issues. 

Then a Mckinsey article titled ‘How a steel plant in India tapped the value of data’ details how Tata Steel's Kalinganagar plant used advanced data analytics to achieve high performance rates and, in the process earned global acclaim. 
In addition, we have excerpts from a highly engaging conversation with Pradeep Patil, Managing Director, TRUMPF (I) Pvt. Ltd where he speaks about the present and upcoming market trends; and the inherent role of digital technologies that are shaping them.

Three Mega Trends – Is India's Automotive Industry Prepared?

The history of the automotive industry has been one full of disruptions and churn. But the industry has also been one that believes in the wisdom: When life gives you churn, make butter. 

Whether it is assembly-line production, advancements in combustible engine (CE) technology, or the introduction of autonomous and connected cars, the automotive industry has a history of turning every challenge, every adversity into an opportunity. 

The last few years have been particularly tough on the industry. Wild swings in crude oil prices, stricter regulations, supply-chain disruptions due to trade conflicts; a host of such challenges and more have impacted the industry’s growth curve. As a result, the year 2019 ended 10 years of continuous growth – global car sales fell by 4% and production by 5%. India’s industry fared no better where car sales declined even further by 12%.  

Then the mother of all challenges – a once-in-a-century pandemic – hit us in 2020. Automotive was among the worst-hit industries. Stakeholders say that the pandemic set back the Indian auto industry by about four years. Global OEMs, even though helped by a recovery in the final three months of the year, still posted a double-digit decline in sales in 2020. 
True to its grit, the auto industry has responded to these challenges by bringing out the big guns of innovation during the last few years. 
Electrification, car connectivity and autonomous driving have been some of the major tech innovations that offer immense hope for this resilient industry in the coming years.

In early February, during the week that Auto Expo 2020 was held at Delhi’s Pragati Maidan, worries and concerns around Covid-19 had begun to grow, particularly among countries, companies and people who had close economic ties to China and were therefore keeping a watch on the epidemic that had began to take root along the New Silk Road from China to Western Europe. Among them were event organizers and automotive manufacturers who had begun to exercise some degree of caution. As a result, not only the expo had restricted the entry of travelers of any nationality coming in from China, but even the expo participants came in well-informed about the growing menace of Covid-19 and its probable impact on Indian manufacturing.
