Wales: A Hotbed For Zebra Finches

DAVE BROWN looks back on a successful judging experience this August at Port Talbot, which offered plenty of strong competition not to mention friendly camaraderie

THE Welsh Zebra Finch Society (WZFS) club show is always a must-see event on my show calendar. Competition is fierce, with fanciers travelling from farand wide to exhibit. This year was no exception and saw Scottish, Irish and European fanciers all making the journey to Port Talbot.

Wales is a real hotbed of zebra finch fanciers. This not only offers good competition, but there are many hands-on club members who all get involved to make sure everything runs smoothly on the day. It also means they have a good number of donations to the annual online bird auction, which raises a healthy amount to help run a great event.

This year, I was honoured to be invited to judge the champion breeders (young birds) and novice adults. Scotsman Gary Craig had the daunting task of placing the champion adults and novice breeders. Alongside these strong sections, there were some fine single bird entries and some good junior exhibits staged by E. & C. Calford and J. Harrison.
