ABOUT PETULA

With a background in graphic design, Petula Stone first made the move into art as an illustrator, after graduating from Leicester Polytechnic (now De Montfort University) in 1976. Petula soon received a host of commissions, starting with children’s books before moving into packaging design and illustration.

Today Petula lives in rural Suffolk in a 19th-century cottage and works in a garden studio. As such, plants and flowers are a recurring theme in her work. Throughout her career, she has worked for many high-profile clients including Waitrose, Marks & Spencer and the National Trust. A favourite commission involved creating a series of botanical illustrations for a fruit and herbal tea range for Ahmad Tea, which she still enjoys spotting in airport shops. Petula also designed and illustrated a series of postal stamps for the Guernsey Post, which provided a wonderful opportunity to study and illustrate the fascinating flora and fauna of the Channel Islands.

Petula joined the Society of East Anglian Watercolourists in 2019 and exhibited two of her paintings in the society’s September exhibition. One of those, The Garden, was awarded the inaugural Artists & Illustrators Award. www.petulastone.co.uk

Colour captures

My Artists & Illustrators award-winning piece, The Garden, came about when I took my class to Fullers Mill Garden in Suffolk for some plein air painting in the summer. I made sketches and colour washes at the garden, which I brought home to my studio.
