SINCE MY TEENS I’VE LOVED CAFÉ RACERS, THE MINIMALIST FOCUSED LOOK, THE PERFORMANCE, THE NOISE, THE WHOLE PACKAGE. THAT LOVE CONTINUED THROUGH MY 20S, 30S, AND 40S, AND I’VE HAD MANY BIKES, BUT NEVER A CAFÉ RACER.

2014, the wrong side of 50 and still without my first love, an unfortunate situation changed that – my dear old mum died at the ripe old age of 91, and left me a little in her estate – not enough for an Egli Vincent or a BSA Gold Star, but enough for a Featherbed frame, and a crash-damaged donor bike.

I started to formulate what I wanted to build; it had to have a twin-cylinder motor with about 80bhp, spoked wheels, good brakes, NOT upside-down forks, an electric start, and reliability – once it was built it had to stay together! My influence for the overall look was Manx Nortons and Matchless G50s. I wanted a modern take on those machines, and so bought a fiberglass Manx Norton petrol tank to be used as a dummy tank to cover the electrics and air intakes.

After trawling eBay for a suitable motor I settled for a Kawasaki ER6 as they had the right power, were totally reliable, and I liked the look. I also got a frame, and a Suzuki GS450 rear wheel. The engine was great (fired up straight away and sounded great), but the frame was borderline scrap – it’d been used for sidecar sprint racing, and’d been drastically altered, very badly, and needed a lot of work to be put right.
