Drag Week Is Speed Week
Hot Rod|January 2020
Fifteen years in, and I can say I am extremely proud of creating HOT ROD Drag Week— and boast that without false humility because this event was completely shaped neither by me nor by HOT ROD, but by the participants whose sense of adventure, sportsmanship, and climbing of personal mountains of automotive achievement made the event what it is and has been for a decade and a half.

Drag Week Is Speed Week

I cannot help but draw parallels to Speed Week at the Bonneville Salt Flats.

While I ripped off the idea of endurance road trip– based drag racing from the One Lap of America event, the Drag Week class rules were structured similar to Southern California Timing Association (SCTA) rules for land-speed racing. The SCTA categorizes cars based upon aerodynamic body mods, engine displacement, blown or unblown, and gas or fuel; Drag Week classes are based upon chassis mods, tire size, engine displacement, and power-adder or not. It’s a very similar logic path.
