The OSA Partnership Group explains that sleep apnoea needs faster treatment
CAMPAIGN
The RHA in collaboration with the RAC and SMMT are supporting the OSA Partnership Group with their lobbying to ensure vocational drivers are given access to treatment within four weeks.
Sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) is common and research shows that driving with untreated OSAS causes greater impairment than drink driving. It is estimated that at least one in ten middle aged men in the UK have it. Given the ageing population of the HGV community, and the higher prevalence of OSAS in those who tend to overweight, this means that there is a higher incidence of the condition amongst HGV drivers. The risk is that if the condition is untreated, those with OSAS are at high risk of falling asleep while driving, leading to damage, personal injury and even deaths, as well as significant financial and reputational costs to businesses like your own.
