With the government’s ‘Road to Zero’ strategy now in force, hauliers all over the UK are looking at ways to efficiently reduce their carbon footprint to keep in line with 2050 targets. But one company already leading the way is LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) and LNG (liquefied natural gas) supplier Flogas Britain, which has taken the bold step of adding two Bio-LNG (liquid biomethane) powered trucks to its transport fleet.
The move is an industry first – becoming the first UK gas supplier to feature Volvo Bio-LNG vehicles within its delivery network. It has also allowed a cut to carbon emissions of more than 80 per cent compared to traditional diesel vehicles, according to Flogas.
Fully operational as of August 2019, the Volvo FM trucks join Flogas’ 400-strong fleet and are being used for transporting bulk LPG and LNG nationwide. “These trucks are just the first of many as we look to make our fleet cleaner, greener and increasingly future-proof,” says Flogas’ head of logistics and supply chain, Tim Eaton.
“Both trucks are powered by renewable Bio-LNG – a highly sustainable biofuel that’s produced during the anaerobic digestion process. This means they release significantly fewer pollutants; and they’re 50 per cent quieter.
“As a leading LNG supplier in the UK, we understand the critical role this fuel will play as we face stringent government targets to tackle carbon emissions and improve air quality,” Tim continues. “While it’s still in its infancy in the transport industry, the strong environmental benefits compared to conventional fuels means LNG is set to become the fuel of choice for heavy goods vehicles.”
