Infrastructure and operations (I&O) are becoming frequently involved in unprecedented areas of the modern-day enterprise. We can witness that the focus of I&O leaders is now evolving far beyond technological elements such as data centres, collocation and the cloud, and more on how an organisation’s I&O can promote and empower business strategy. This is a dramatic evolution in I&O and it is happening right now, as the world is no longer limited by the hardware or software, but becoming more about delivering services that achieve business needs. The future of infrastructure is everywhere and anywhere, and in the coming future it is going to be business-driven by nature. As IT leaders are struggling to maintain their existing operations and accommodate this new role as well, they rarely have moments to gaze beyond short-term planning horizons. Hence, this article is going to address nine key technological trends that are going to support digital infrastructure in the near future.
1. Server-less computing or in particular the capability known as function platform as a service (FPaaS), is an emerging software architecture trend that pledges to eradicate the requirement for infrastructure provisioning and management. This will enable code residing as a program to be run, without the need for the user to explicitly provision or manage infrastructure. This trend is supposed to become mainstream by the year 2022, with around 10 per cent of IT organisations already using serverless computing. IT leaders should learn about the opportunities and limitation of this, identifying best practices and piloting test cases to gain knowledge and skills.
