HELLO! GIVES ITS VERDICT ON THE BIG ANNOUNCEMENT THAT HAS ROCKED THE MONARCHY

“It was less than two years ago that the champagne corks were popping in the HELLO! offices in celebration of the marriage of Prince Harry, a much-loved member of the royal family, and his bride, American actress Meghan Markle. Not only were we toasting this happy and grand occasion, but also what it meant. We were thrilled to welcome this inspiring woman – whose background, mixed-race heritage and passions provided so much to celebrate – because she marked an exciting, new, modern era for the royal family. So it was a huge shock last week when we learnt the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have made the decision effectively to step away from the world’s most famous family. We understand and respect the Sussexes’ decision and wish them the best with what lies next for them and their adorable son Archie. But our big wish is that they are able to resolve any differences with the wider family, especially the Queen, as quickly and smoothly as possible. Over the coming days and weeks, we will discover what Harry and Meghan’s “progressive” new roles will be. Ultimately, we hope the monarchy will be able to harness the star quality and humanity of this dynamic young couple in a suitable way, as they have so much to offer.”

Setting out their bold plans for the future, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex last week announced they were stepping back from their roles as senior members of the royal family and will divide their time between the UK and North America in years to come.

Coming a day after Prince Harry and Meghan returned to public duties, the news was a “bolt out of the blue” both in and outside Buckingham Palace.
